Fun Fall Science Experiments for Preschoolers

This time of year is best for two exciting activities: 1) Dressing for Halloween, and 2) Fall-Themed Science Projects. We want to discuss the latter in this article because it’s a terrific time of year (now that the summer heat has subsided) to explore the outside environment. It’s perhaps most true for any budding young scientists out there.

Fun Fall Science Experiments for Preschoolers

Pumpkin Volcanoes –

Volcanoes are arguably the quintessential science experiment for grade-school children. It can work well even for younger ones, provided parents guide them through the process. Pumpkin volcanoes add a fall/Halloween element to this terrific learning activity. How do you make one? Carve any pumpkin and mix the following ingredients: baking soda, dish soap, vinegar, and red food coloring. All those together will produce a chemical reaction, similar to an eruption. The red dye makes it look like fiery lava.

Pine Cone Moisture Tests –

Pine cones exhibit a very interesting effect whenever they’re exposed to moisture. All you would do is collect several of them while they’re still closed tightly together. Leave them somewhere exposed to moisture and watch how they open and expand. Take before and after pictures to help your child notice the changes.

Pumpkin Growing –

If you’d like to teach your child how to work through an experiment patiently, then this is a solid option. By taking them through the growing cycle (from seed to full-blown pumpkin), they’ll earn their first taste of farming and gardening. Just remember that this requires at least three months if you wish to achieve a fully mature pumpkin in Colorado.

Leaf Color Dynamics

We enjoy lots of wonderful colors every autumn in the Rocky Mountain region. Parents and teachers can leverage such beauty as a nice way to teach preschoolers and older children. This can be simple by collecting leaves, keeping them in a container, and documenting the color changes over the course of a few weeks. For more advanced learning, the older ones can examine how chlorophyll changes leaf properties, taking them from green to fall colors like red, orange, or yellow.
