Preparing Your Child for Childcare

As parents, one of our most essential duties involves preparing our children for the various changes they will face. This spans everything from going to school for the first time to graduating highschool to preparing for work or college. It also includes helping them adapt to a new childcare program, which will ideally lead them into a bold new world, what we often call “growing up.”

With that in mind, let’s explore some practical tips for easing your child’s way into a new childcare program, ensuring their greatest chance for success.

Tips for Preparing Your Child for Childcare

  1. Research & Visit the Childcare School or Program – This is fundamental for many reasons, not the least of which being that you should know whether the available programs and curriculum would suit a child’s specific needs. Not every childcare program involves the same volume and variety of academic, after-school, and social opportunities. Don’t forget that this should include researching the program’s qualifications AND taking a tour of the facilities (and meeting the staff).
  2. Explain the Changes to Your Child – While using terms they can understand, it’s very important to give them an idea of what to expect. Nothing intimidates children (or adults, for that matter) more than sending them into something totally unknown. It’s vital to remind them that childcare does not mean you won’t see them again. Here, you have the chance to eliminate any dangerous misperceptions and alleviate fears.
  3. Consider Starting a Part-Time Program – It never hurts to start slowly with childcare, especially if you aren’t sure how your child will adapt. Some parents opt for shorter childcare sessions or some other graduated approach. It’s like wading into the swimming pool rather than plunging straight into the deep end.
  4. Focus on Routines – You should work on routines well before starting a childcare program. It never hurts to get them used to going places in order to reduce the shock of being away from home more often. Then, once they begin school, you can also send them there with familiar items (toys, food, blankets, etc.) to help smooth the transition.
  5. Some Separation Anxiety is Normal – Yes, it’s normal for a child to experience this, and perhaps all of us have at some point or another. It’s all part of becoming an adult if you think about it. Fortunately, the well-prepared parents can anticipate the anxiety by applying these tips with their child (particularly tips #2 and #4).
