Every parent wants to know how their child is progressing during those most formative years of their life. This covers everything from walking and growing to socializing and problem-solving. There is so much to keep track of when you’re raising an infant or toddler.
We’d like to address some of the most important milestones of child development, and offer tips on how to measure how a child grows.

Physical Aspects
This developmental component may be the most intuitive to parents, but there’s a lot of ground to cover.
- Babies lifting their heads for the first time.
- Turning or rolling over
- Crawling
- Walking
- Jumping
- Climbing
- . . . and much more.
Adults take these for granted until they witness their children clear these hurdles. Each of us has to overcome them but we did so before we were old enough to remember the achievement. Each task, be it jumping or crawling, requires significant patience, muscle coordination, and strength for any child to accomplish.
Cognitive Development
Then there are all the mental or neurological tasks we learn to do from infancy through the rest of childhood. It starts with learning to process all the visual, auditory, and other sensory cues around us. Later, it progresses into complex reasoning abilities, everything from recognizing shapes and patterns to solving problems and coping with frustrations.
Social Skills
How well does your child interact with his/her peers and the adults they encounter? These are some of the most essential social milestones, indicating where your child stands.
- Showing affection
- Maintaining eye contact
- Sharing belongings
- Using proper vocal volume (especially indoors)
- Managing emotions
- Following the rules in various social settings
Language Skills
Children possess a tremendous capacity for learning words and grammar before reaching adolescence. For that reason, they actually hold an advantage over adults with mastering foreign languages. However, there’s much more to it.
Babies go all the way from babbling and gibberish to learning how to pronounce words coherently. Then they practice sentence formulation, gain an ability to explain themselves, read books and stories, and eventually do all that in writing (with proper training and guidance).
